A Demand for Truth: Black History Belongs in Every School and Library
We, the undersigned, stand in unwavering defiance against the systematic erasure of Black history from our nation’s schools and libraries. These bans are not mere administrative decisions—they are acts of violence against the truth, deliberate attempts to whitewash the narratives that shape our shared past and inform our collective future. Black history is not an elective. It is not a privilege granted at the whim of politicians. Black history is American history, essential and inextricable from the fabric of this nation.
The banning of books that explore the realities of Black existence, resilience, and triumph is a direct attack on the fundamental principles of education: to enlighten, to challenge, and to empower. These efforts to suppress the voices of Black authors, historians, and thinkers reveal a deeper fear—a fear of an informed generation who will not tolerate inequality or injustice.
We reject this fear. We reject the notion that the truth is dangerous. What is dangerous is the perpetuation of ignorance, the deliberate silencing of stories that inspire critical thought and foster empathy. What is dangerous is teaching a sanitized version of history that excludes the legacies of slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, and the ongoing fight for racial justice.
We demand a national mandate to restore Black history to its rightful place in public schools and libraries. We demand that every student, regardless of where they live, has access to books and curricula that reflect the fullness of this country’s history. We demand an end to the cultural censorship that diminishes us all.
This is not just a fight for Black students, educators, and families—it is a fight for the soul of our nation. Without the truth, there can be no justice. Without justice, there can be no progress.
We call upon educators, parents, students, and allies to join us in this demand. Speak out at school board meetings. Mobilize your communities. Flood your representatives with letters and calls. Let them know that we will not stand idly by as the truth is buried.
The future of our children depends on the stories they are told today. We owe it to them to ensure that Black history, in all its complexity and power, remains an indelible part of their education.
Bring Black History Back. Forgetting the Past Risks Repeating It.
